Thanks for the info on the flywheel, my first impression was someone resurfaced it to thin, thus causing it to crack. So it you thing the 5.9 would be a good match let me know, it looks like they are popular and plentiful. From some sources I have looked at puts both these trucks in the low end of heavy duty. pounds, the 1978 International 1800 is rated at 32,500. My dump truck a 1970 International 1850 has a GVWR of 27,500. It also looks the ratings for medium duty vs heavy duty have changed over the years, making things even more confusing. I would really like to run a non computerized power plant also, is the 5.9 a mechanical engine? The more I research and ask questions the more I find it's just like the old hot rodders argument between Ford and Chevy LOL. I don't remember if I mentioned the transmission is a Spicer 5000 series, would be disappointing to learn this transmission would not hold up, but I am not sure at this point if it would match up behind the L10, or the 5.9 either. I also have a 1978 model 1800 that would never be able to accept the 6. I know the inline 6's are longer than the v8's, I am lucky that my International Model 1850 has a cut out in the firewall and will accept a longer engine. I have considered the 5.9, as the horse power and torque ratings are better then the 555 in a much lighter package, but I was worried if it could stand up to the demands of a medium duty truck as it looks like it is mostly used in pickups, so please correct me if I am wrong, I really like the idea of a million mile engine. This waiting around on parts to come in is killing me! I think Cummins must have someone swimming them over from England! I almost want to re power just to get the truck back to work. I really appreciate it when people chime in with their knowledge. Thanks Destroked: I have a lot automotive experience, but unfortunately not much experience with diesels, or medium duty trucks.

The dump pump and corresponding drive shaft are totally worn out and the ram needs rebuilding. U joints in the main drive shaft are in good shape, surprisingly but they are easy to get to. While I'm in there I might as well replace the trough out and pilot bearing. It looks like a pricey part to replace though.

Also the flywheel is full of cracks, I suppose this could be a potentially dangerous situation and I am glad I caught it before pieces started coming loose. I got the rear cover off and the rear main seal out, I found the crank is grooved, so I will have to sleeve it.
